The Faculty of Dentistry USIM, in collaboration with the Islamic Dental Association of Malaysia or IDAM had successfully organized the 3rd i-Dent 2016 Seminar from 11th to 14th of August 2016. Consisted of a two-day pre-seminar workshops and two-day seminar, the main target audience were the dental officers.

The workshops had received an overwhelming response. The participants for the seminar however, was a liitle bit under the expectation despite having renowned speakers for the seminar. The seminar managed to attract only 40 participants.

The implant workshop sponsored by Straumann kick started the first day of pre-seminar, with an implant talk in the morning. Later in the afternoon, participants had a hands-on session on the implant. Questions were raised and answered during the hands on.

Live surgery was carried out on the second day of the workshop. Implants and flaps were done on three patients using three different systems. Some participants were lucky enough to get a chance to assist the surgeons. Some participants chose to observe the procedure in the clinics. Others watched the live surgery on the screen provided, while helping themselves to some biscuits and tea.

Another workshop sponsored by Dentsply, was also held on the second day. Participants were given an RM800 worth kit for them to have a feel and practice on the rotary instruments. Both workshops took place in Fakulti Pergigian USIM, Pandan Indah.

On the 3rd and 4th day, seminars took place at the Rajah Brooke Ballroom, in Nilai Spring Resort, Negeri Sembilan. In line with the theme of the seminar, the lectures started by an inspiring talk from the celebrity surgeon, Dr Firdaus Hariri who brought back the bitter sweet memories and challenges he had to go through to be what he is today. The subsequent lectures get more informative with talk on current practice by the Paeds expert, Dr Nazatul and the updates on the latest high technology surgery planning, by Mr Nazimi. Late in the evening, talks on implant were given by Dr Eshamsul and Dr Tetsuro Shinoda, but from different perspectives.

We decided to start it light on the second day, with Dr Shamsul Anuar’s talk on the choices of technology available to ease the treatment planning and time. After the morning break, the participants were uplifted by an energizing talk and sajak from the Emeritus Professor Dato’ Dr Hashim Yaacob. A periodontal lecture was also given by Dr Shahida. Towards the evening, the two famous panelists, Dr Zamri Radzi and Dr Elise, have handled the hot topics of fake braces and medicolegal issues.

Despite of some hiccups during the planning, the seminars overall, ran well. The supports from the sponsors were really a big help. Applause for the directors and the committee to be able to held such an event.
