National Dental Students' Scientific Conference (NDSSC) 2017

National Dental Students’ Scientific conference (NDSSC) is an annual conference conducted by students, for students with the aim of encouraging students to interact, compete and build fellowship with peers from other dental schools in Malaysia. This year,  NDSSC was organised by Penang International Dental College (PIDC) which was held on the 6th and 7th of May 2017 in Butterworth, Penang at The Light Hotel. The theme of the conference this year is “Inspire, Integrate, Innovate”. This theme presents the students an opportunity to be inspired by the distinguished speakers and will give a platform to interact and integrate with peers from other dental schools as well as learn to “think out of the box” with innovation in mind.

USIM had participated in several competitions; oral presentation (Zalina Baharudin – year 5), poster presentation (Zaid Ahmad Shariffudin – yr 5), table clinic (Ammar Yasser Abdul Hakim and Nabilah Nuairy – yr 5), soap carving (Ammar Yaseer Abdul Hakim- yr 5), calligraphy (Aisyah Abdul Aziz - yr 1), Quiz (Nabilah Nuairy, Zaid Ahmad Shariffudin, Ahmad Salman Mohd Jan – yr 5), video competition (Muhammad Anas Bukhari Abu Hanifah – yr 4) and wire bending (Abdullah Ayub - yr 4).


We managed to secure silver medal for table clinic competition and bronze medal for video competition. The overall winner of the conference was MAHSA.

On 15th May 2017, Faculty of Dentistry had organized a seminar entitled Virtual and Digital Implant Dentistry at Your Fingertip. The aim of this seminar was to expose the participants with the digital evolution in dentistry, to assist the implant placement for moderate and difficult case seen by the dentist as well as dental specialists. In addition, this seminar was a great opportunity for the participants to have a close look at dental implant and its procedure.


This program, which began at 9.00 am, had gathered 21 participants, mainly dental officers, from both government and private sectors from all over Malaysia. This program started with a welcoming speech from the President of IDAM (Islamic Dental Association of Malaysia) Dr Firdaus Hanapiah.

The seminar begin with lecture by Dr Khatiravan followed by second lecture from Dr Firdaus Hanafiah. The invited speaker was Dr Jui Tang Cho brought by BENQ Company from Taiwan, with a lecture entitle “The Arts and Science of Surgical Planning and the Reality of Surgery”. The afternoon session was demonstration followed by a Live Surgery session USIM Dental Specialist Clinic on a real patient.


This seminar was co-organized with the cooperation between Dental Faculty, USIM and the Islamic Dental Association of Malaysia (IDAM) as part of MoU activities from both parties. The committee members for organizing this seminar consisted of USIM staffs, IDAM member and BENQ Company.

In conclusion, Virtual and Digital Implant Dentistry and Live Surgery seminar run smoothly and the feedback was very good. Hopefully this cooperattion will continue to organize such this program and always being blessed by Allah S.W.T.

Department of Conservative Dentistry & Prosthodontic, Faculty of Dentistry USIM, has organized a workshop on ’copy denture’ technique on 13th of April 2017 (Thursday) in Faculty of Dentistry, USIM. The aim of this workshop was to give a platform to introduce the technique for copy denture and its procedures to the participants. In addition, this workshop would introduce the participants to try the innovation of CopyDent Box (previously known as Duplo box) by the research team.

About 90 participants attended this workshop; consisted of dentist and dental technologists from both government and private sectors throughout Malaysia including Sarawak. This program started with welcoming speech by Deputy Dean of Academic and Research, FPg Dr Norlela Yacob and as principle investigator for the innovative research.

The morning session began with lecture delivered by Col. (R) Dr Aida Ali, entitled ‘Stability of Full False Teeth: What You Need to Know’. Next, the program continued with the introduction of ‘Copy Denture’ technique by Dr Nusima Mohamed. Then, after a slight morning break, the next lecture 'Copy Denture': Indications and Procedures took placed. The morning session ended with a comprehensive introduction on CopyDent Box by Dr Faizah Abdul Fatah.

In the afternoon, participants had the opportunities to see the demonstration and make their own a replica denture using soap box and CopyDent Box. Dental officers had the chance to see live-demonstration from Dr Norlela Yacob on the copy denture procedure on real patient in Treatment Room II, Polyclinic Level 16.
