KUALA LUMPUR, August 30, 2018 – The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Pathology and Medicine (JPPPOM), Faculty of Dentistry (FPg) Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia organized a community service program that was conducted at Jalan Chow Kit, Kuala Lumpur. The main aim of the programme is to provide dental health care to the homeless and urban poor in this area. According to the United Nations, people who live in various conditions, such as, those without physical shelter and who sleep outdoors, those who live in vehicles, abandoned buildings or of those who’s physical shelter is substandard, do not meet the basic requirements of health and safety. The objective of this program is to offer free dental check-ups and basic treatments, to provide free dental hygiene kits and educate the homeless and urban poor of the importance of dental hygiene. This program is conducted in collaboration with Dentistry for the Needy.

On this occasion approximately 20 needy individuals (including kids and adults) benefited from the dental examinations and treatments performed by the dedicated clinical lecturers(dental specialists). They also received free consultations and dental hygiene kits. All volunteers, lecturers and dental students gave their best to make the community service a success. It is hoped that this program will provide an ongoing benefit to the underprivileged Chow Kit community and enhance inter-disciplinary cooperation between FPg members and students.
