The Star Golden Hearts Award is dedicated to celebrate those Malaysians who acted heroically or selflessly by building bridges between different communities, and in doing so promoting racial harmony and unity. This award, which is supported by Yayasan Gamuda, announced its ten individual/group winners for the year 2018, in a ceremony officiated by Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye.
Dentistry for The Needy (DFTN) was founded two years ago by Dr. Abu Razali, Dr. Nor Azura Ahmad Tarmidzi (Faculty of Dentistry, USIM) and Dr. Khairul Anwar Sanusi was recently announced as one of the recipients. This not for profit organization aims to provide valuable free dental treatment and dental education to the needy (homeless, orang asal, refugees and orphans). While DFTN started in Kuala Lumpur, there are longer- term plans to expand it to other states.
Pre-clinical and clinical years students from Faculty of Dentistry, USIM have been actively volunteering in DFTN programmes for homeless people in Chow Kit and Rohingya refugees in Selayang. These activities provide a platform for the students to employ their knowledge from classroom while gaining experience working with the community.
